"For Jesus, bamboo is not just a job, it is a passion."

--A West County customer, 4/2/11

“Wow, I had no idea they were so many different kinds!”

--Annette, 4/6/11

Bamboo is a remarkable plant, but like so many subjects, the more you learn, the more you realize there is yet to learn. If bamboo is what you are looking for, Jesus Mora is the man to see. He is well known amongst bamboo aficionados for his expertise arising from 25 years of hands-on experience.

Jesus discovered his affinity for bamboo when he was hired by Gerald Bol in 1986. Gerald himself was a significant figure amongst his bamboo peers and had the species Borinda boliana named for him. Jesus worked for ten years under Gerald's tutelage. Together they discovered the nuances of each species and became masters of growth habits and propagation requirements. Jesus has a natural talent for observing the subtle differences amongst species. He is particularly known for his ability to identify bamboo species from the hundreds of options.

Following Gerald's untimely death in 1996, Jesus took over as Nursery Manager of the Bamboo Sourcery, and has continued Gerald's legacy of propagation and preservation, including travel abroad for collection purposes. Jesus is also a board member of the American Bamboo Society, and a consultant for the bamboo section of the Sunset Western Garden Book where his experience has proven him to be an invaluable resource.

In 2010, Jesus opened his own bamboo nursery, offering his knowledge to bamboo enthusiasts and novices alike through the advent of West County Oasis Bamboo Garden. Whether weeper or upright, ground cover or towering timber, striated or colored canes, full sun or full shade, hillsides or screens, containers or ground, fishing poles or flutes, Jesus knows the species that will fit the bill.
